{"id":26566,"date":"2021-10-19T21:27:17","date_gmt":"2021-10-20T01:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blackhealthmatters.com\/?p=26566"},"modified":"2025-10-21T14:41:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T18:41:21","slug":"breast-cancer-black-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackhealthmatters.com\/breast-cancer-black-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Breast Cancer Deadlier for Black Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Breast cancer doesn\u2019t just <a href=\"https:\/\/blackhealthmatters.com\/breast-cancer\/race-and-ethnicity-affect-breast-cancer-survival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affect Black women disproportionately<\/a>, it\u2019s also a problem for Black men. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jncics\/article\/4\/1\/pkz091\/5645198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent study<\/a>, the incidence rates of breast cancer are higher for Black men than white men.<\/p>\n<p>Male breast cancer is rare, but important. It accounts for less than 2% of all cancers in men and approximately 2% of all breast cancers in the United States. The American Cancer Society <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer-in-men\/about\/key-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated that in 2021<\/a> about 2,650 men will be diagnosed and about 530 men will die from breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Like Black women, Black men face similar health disparities when it comes to breast cancer. Not only do Black men have a 52% higher rate of contracting the disease than white men, they\u2019re also 76% more likely to die\u2014even with similar treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, reasons for the elevated risk of breast cancer in Black men are largely unknown but may involve a multitude of risk factors including genetic and nongenetic factors. The <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jncics\/article\/4\/1\/pkz091\/5645198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study author<\/a>s concluded more research is needed to determine these factors.<\/p>\n<p>While breast cancer may be rare for men, it\u2019s important to be aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/breast-cancer-in-men\/detection-diagnosis-staging\/signs-symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signs and symptoms<\/a>.
