Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a serious health condition, especially for vulnerable
\npopulations, particularly infants. Black Health Matters recently hosted an engaging
\nwebinar, sponsored by Sanofi, that highlighted a deeply personal account from a mother
\nwhose family was directly impacted by RSV along with expert insight and education
\nsurrounding this viral illness.<\/p>\n
Charzell is a mother of two who experienced the frightening reality of RSV when her
\nyoungest child was diagnosed. Charzell recounted, \u201cWe were visiting family and I had
\ngone out to run some errands. My mom called me and let me know my daughter was
\nhaving a hard time breathing and choking on her mucus. I was in a panic and didn\u2019t
\nknow what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
Charzell ended up taking her daughter to the emergency room where she was initially
\nsent home. However her daughter\u2019s symptoms failed to improve, resulting in a second
\nemergency visit a few days later where she was eventually diagnosed with RSV.
\nCharzell\u2019s story resonates deeply with those who have found themselves in similar
\nsituations, shedding light on the emotional toll RSV can take on families and also the
\nimportance of advocating for your children\u2019s health. She also shared how gaps in
\neducation provided in the hospital and an initial missed diagnosis affected her family.<\/p>\n
Following Charzell\u2019s story, the panel transitioned to a discussion with Dr. Jasmine
\nWeiss, a board-certified pediatrician and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The
\nUniversity of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She emphasized how RSV symptoms can look like other illnesses including the common cold. \u201cSymptoms tend to occur in stages,\u201d she explained, urging families to be vigilant about recognizing symptoms such as difficulty breathing and decreased appetite and seeking medical care.
\nShe stressed the importance of seeking medical attention early and returning to the hospital or clinic if needed if symptoms worsen, just as Charzell did.<\/p>\n
