The bodies of public figures like <\/span>Wicked For Good<\/span><\/i> Stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have always been up for discussion. Social media has made the conversation louder than ever.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both performers have shown up on the press lines for the anticipated musical, appearing significantly <\/span>thinner <\/span><\/a>than before. Commentary on the topic exploded. Some speculated that the pair might be participating in disordered eating or excessive usage of increasingly popular <\/span>weight loss medications<\/span><\/a> like GLP-1s.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commenting on someone\u2019s appearance has become more commonplace. Social media makes it easier. \u201cThe access that we have to speak on people now is quite dangerous,\u201d Wendi S. Williams, PhD, <\/span>President-Elect<\/span><\/a> of the American Psychological Association, told Black Health Matters. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the advent of social media and so much use of technology and the ability to propagate a message so vastly, a person could have an opinion about a celebrity or a politician that they see in the news or in one of those magazines, and it would have been an opinion shared either to themselves or within the locality of their friends and family,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyone can place them into the world where they might cause harm, now.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grande posted a message on social media containing a \u201cloving reminder\u201d of the harm that can be caused by commenting on the size of someone\u2019s body. She addressed the comments on her figure during an interview with <\/span>Oui Oui Baguette<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo I have heard it all. I\u2019ve heard every version of it, of what’s wrong with me. And then you fix it, and then it’s wrong for different reasons,\u201d said Grande. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to protect yourself from that noise,\u201d continued the \u201c7 Rings\u201d singer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Lizzo wrote about how the aftermath of losing weight was impacting her in a recent <\/span>essay on Substack<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI think it’s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on,\u201d Grande added in the interview.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think that we can ever diminish the impact of so much public opinion on the psyche of one individual,\u201d said Williams.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
