Looking into your kidneys could save your life, ask Octavia Spencer. The Academy Award-winning actress is using her star power to shed light on the silent signals your organs can send you that your body is in trouble.\u00a0<\/span>She has partnered with Boehringer Ingelheim, along with key organizations including the American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation, Mended Hearts, and WomenHeart, to promote \u201cDetect The SOS,\u201d a\u00a0health initiative<\/a> urging the public to access uACR urine testing.<\/span>\u00a0This screening can\u00a0identify\u00a0several\u00a0health problems before they progress into more serious territory.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why This Initiative is Important to Spencer<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cChronic kidney disease (CKD) affects one-quarter to one-third of adults with diabetes in the USA. Patients with CKD and type 2 diabetes have an elevated risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease and can eventually progress to end-stage kidney disease,\u201d according to a 2025 article in\u00a0<\/span>BMJ\u00a0Open Diabetes Research & Care<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0Studies show that risk is higher for the Black community, which has a higher rate of diabetes and high blood pressure as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This makes the initiative personal to Spencer. \u201cI’m a part of this health mission because I suffer from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure that I control,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd because type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and heart disease are quite prevalent in the Black community, as a Black woman, I felt compelled to become a part of this collective, to educate people.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why\u00a0We\u00a0Should Consider\u00a0uACR\u00a0Testing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This testing can help you\u00a0identify\u00a0serious health issues long before they begin to slow down your lifestyle. Spencer will appear alongside<\/span>\u00a0Modern Family<\/span><\/i>\u00a0star Sofia Vergara, whose mother has high blood pressure<\/a>, in their upcoming commercial that will play during\u00a0Sunday\u2019s\u00a0big game\u00a0(aka The Super Bowl). With a play on action movies, its engaging tone will encourage viewers to get serious about their health by accessing the information\u00a0uACR\u00a0can offer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She described the ways that your kidneys can send out invisible distress signals.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIf you suffer from diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Your body could be sending out a silent SOS through your kidneys, and there is\u00a0an easy way\u00a0to detect that,\u201d Spencer continued. \u201cIt’s important for all of us to know our numbers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0Journal of the American Society of Nephrology<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0recommends\u00a0the critical need to increase\u00a0uACR\u00a0screening rates in at-risk patients.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Busyness of Life Can Distract Us from Our Health<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Whether\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0focused on status reports\u00a0at work, sports\u00a0games\u00a0or\u00a0family activities,\u00a0it can be easy to sideline doctor\u2019s visits when there are no visible issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spencer admitted to putting her health on the back burner, something many people do until they are unable to ignore it. \u201cI’m a regular woman, and like regular people, a lot of the times, we don’t go to the doctor until we feel ill,\u201d she says. \u201cBeing a part of this mission has made me realize that I\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to wait until I feel sick,\u00a0because then\u00a0sometimes it can be too late to turn things around. So now,\u00a0I’m\u00a0being more proactive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How Her Work and Greater Mission Align<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Spencer offers her support to marginalized communities at her day job as well. She is preparing for the February 25 return of<\/span>\u00a0Lost Women of Alaska<\/span><\/i>, the fourth installment of the\u00a0<\/span>Lost Women\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/a>franchise, highlighting true crime stories. The series highlights who can be at a higher risk of facing harm at the hands of another. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She shared why the premise of the show connects to her heart, as someone who could have easily been in a different place in life. Spencer was headed for law school before choosing the creative path after the loss of her mother. She might have been banging a gavel instead of walking red carpets.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWomen, the elderly, children are our most vulnerable, and this season of<\/span>\u00a0Lost Women<\/span><\/i>\u00a0takes place in Alaska, where Indigenous women are preyed upon,\u201d she says. Black women, like indigenous women, are at a\u00a0<\/span>higher risk\u00a0<\/span><\/a>of being murdered. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s important for me because my trajectory in life\u00a0changed,\u201d she says. \u201cSo\u00a0this is a way for me to satiate the need for justice.\u201d The series aims to highlight \u201cpeople whose voices have been stolen\u201d and \u201cto raise awareness for women who might find themselves in compromising positions to always be aware of their surroundings and who they associate with.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spencer is Prioritizing Her Health & A Balanced Life<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When she is not reminding people to learn about their bodies and be mindful of predators,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0connecting with her loved ones.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/b>I have learned that spending time with family and friends is just as important as\u00a0getting up and exercising\u00a0and eating healthy. These days, we are all on our devices and not necessarily interacting with our loved ones,\u201d she continues. \u201cThey say, laughter is the best medicine. I\u00a0don’t\u00a0know that\u00a0it’s\u00a0the best medicine, but I know that it is good medicine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0not focused on the medicine of movement. After twenty years of living with diabetes, she knows the importance of keeping up with her\u00a0pilates.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI’m 55<\/a>, and I want to enter that phase of my life stronger,\u201d she says. \u201cThe best way to do that, I think, is to be as preventative as possible.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of that prevention is knowing her numbers and continuing to focus on what she wants from the next phase of her life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
