The Academy Award-winning actress is using her star power to shed light on the silent signals your organs can send you that your body is in trouble.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">She has partnered with Boehringer Ingelheim, along with key organizations including the American Diabetes Association, National Kidney Foundation, Mended Hearts, and WomenHeart, to promote \u201cDetect The SOS,\u201d a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/patient.boehringer-ingelheim.com\/us\/detect-the-sos\/mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health initiative<\/a> urging the public to access uACR urine testing.<\/span>\u00a0This screening can\u00a0identify\u00a0several\u00a0health problems before they progress into more serious territory.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why This Initiative is Important to Spencer<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cChronic kidney disease (CKD) affects one-quarter to one-third of adults with diabetes in the USA. Patients with CKD and type 2 diabetes have an elevated risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease and can eventually progress to end-stage kidney disease,\u201d according to a 2025 article in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12551518\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">BMJ\u00a0Open Diabetes Research &amp; Care<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0Studies show that risk is higher for the Black community, which has a higher rate of diabetes and high blood pressure as well.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This makes the initiative personal to Spencer. \u201cI&#8217;m a part of this health mission because I suffer from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure that I control,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd because type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and heart disease are quite prevalent in the Black community, as a Black woman, I felt compelled to become a part of this collective, to educate people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why\u00a0We\u00a0Should Consider\u00a0uACR\u00a0Testing<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This testing can help you\u00a0identify\u00a0serious health issues long before they begin to slow down your lifestyle. Spencer will appear alongside<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Modern Family<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0star Sofia Vergara, whose mother has <a href=\"https:\/\/blackhealthmatters.com\/is-your-blood-pressure-too-high\/\">high blood pressure<\/a>, in their upcoming commercial that will play during\u00a0Sunday\u2019s\u00a0big game\u00a0(aka The Super Bowl). With a play on action movies, its engaging tone will encourage viewers to get serious about their health by accessing the information\u00a0uACR\u00a0can offer.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She described the ways that your kidneys can send out invisible distress signals.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIf you suffer from diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. So now,\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0being more proactive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How Her Work and Greater Mission Align<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spencer offers her support to marginalized communities at her day job as well. She is preparing for the February 25 return of<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Lost Women of Alaska<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the fourth installment of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dw_fH0g7Wrs\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lost Women\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">franchise, highlighting true crime stories. The series highlights who can be at a higher risk of facing harm at the hands of another. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She shared why the premise of the show connects to her heart, as someone who could have easily been in a different place in life. Spencer was headed for law school before choosing the creative path after the loss of her mother. She might have been banging a gavel instead of walking red carpets.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWomen, the elderly, children are our most vulnerable, and this season of<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Lost Women<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0takes place in Alaska, where Indigenous women are preyed upon,\u201d she says. Black women, like indigenous women, are at a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8371068\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">higher risk\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of being murdered. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt&#8217;s important for me because my trajectory in life\u00a0changed,\u201d she says. \u201cSo\u00a0this is a way for me to satiate the need for justice.\u201d The series aims to highlight \u201cpeople whose voices have been stolen\u201d and \u201cto raise awareness for women who might find themselves in compromising positions to always be aware of their surroundings and who they associate with.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spencer is Prioritizing Her Health &amp; A Balanced Life<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When she is not reminding people to learn about their bodies and be mindful of predators,\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0connecting with her loved ones.\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I have learned that spending time with family and friends is just as important as\u00a0getting up and exercising\u00a0and eating healthy. These days, we are all on our devices and not necessarily interacting with our loved ones,\u201d she continues. \u201cThey say, laughter is the best medicine. I\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0know that\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0the best medicine, but I know that it is good medicine.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0mean\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0not focused on the medicine of movement.
